¡This Week We’re Going Hola Chef for Cinco de Mayo!

Here’s how we’re going to celebrate – and why you should, too.

Anyone interested in a reason for a fiesta, the perfect opportunity is here. This Saturday it’s Cinco de Mayo! That is “5th of May” in Spanish.

Don’t worry if you miss it. Just think of next week as the extended holiday. Have your Mexican munch on Sunday, Monday or any other day. Needless to say to anyone who’s ever had Mexican food – you’re going to love it!

Cinco de Mayo celebrates a Mexico victory over the French in the 19th century. The attack happened on the 5th of May in 1862, and the battle lasted from daybreak to early evening.

The victory itself was not very significant for Mexican citizens – more like a symbolic one. In fact, nowadays Cinco de Mayo isn’t wildly celebrated in Mexico. In the United States and other countries across the world with significant Mexican populations, people use the date to mark a celebration of Mexican-American culture, music, art and food.

I’m not from North America, but I’m going to definitely celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year. The one thing I love most about living in the United Arab Emirates is that everyone is very accepting of cultures other than their own. My family and I love celebrating almost all other national holidays. I mean, what would life be like without Chinese new year, St. Patrick’s Day, or Diwali? It would be a lot less interesting and a lot less fun, that’s for sure!

I love, love, love Mexican food (no big surprise there!). It’s so perfectly balanced with spicy, tangy, zesty and creamy elements.

Just think about fajitas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas or nachos with all that gorgeous melted cheese, hearty beans and chicken, fresh veggies… Topped generously with chopped coriander and a nice dollop of fresh cream… With different kinds of guacamole, salsas as condiments. Yummmm…

I might even decorate the table with cacti and colourfully striped table cloths. I want to sit down to feast with a sombrero hat on my head. (Okay, maybe lose the sombrero.)

Here’s how you can get your Cinco de Mayo celebration started.

I picked up a great recipe for you to try. It has been tried and tested many times, and most importantly, much loved. Actually, it isn’t just a recipe – it’s a Fajita Fiesta! Even more great news: it only takes 20 minutes to make.
