How to Deseed Pomegranate (Looking Like a Pro)

By Jun 8, 2020 Tips & How-To's

Pomegranate is one of our favourite ingredients in the world. You could go as far as to say that our love for this iconic fruit is passionate. So is the method we use to deseed it. Very passionate!

Have you found pomegranates in your Hello Chef meal box? It is to be expected during Ramadan, as there are pomegranate dishes on the menu every week throughout the holy month.

Deseeding the gorgeous fruit can be a messy exercise, but the good news is, that it doesn’t have to be. Read the tips and watch the video from below on how to get the job done in a jiffy. Get ready to impress!

You need a cutting board, a large bowl, a knife and a (wooden) spoon.

First, halve the pomegranate on the horizontal. Take the first halve and hold it over a large bowl, the back of your left hand and the cut side of the pomegranate facing down.

Start smacking the skin of the pomegranate half, using a (wooden) spoon in your right hand. It’s okay to hit very hard. Soon you’ll see (and feel) the pomegranate seeds starting to drop into the bowl from between your left hand fingers.

Continue to hit the pomegranate skin all around. You can also squeeze the halve slightly with your left hand (the one that’s holding the fruit) to release the seeds even better.

(Needless to say: hold the pomegranate with your right hand and smack it with your left hand if you’re left-handed!)

When you’re done with the first halve, repeat the method with the second halve. Finally pick out any bits of the white membrane from the bowl. Discard the shell and the membrane.

Sprinkle your dinner with the juicy, sweet, tangy, ruby red pomegranate seeds. Make sure to marvel the end result for a moment before digging in!
