Dear Client, you’re doing it right

By Sep 3, 2018 Food waste

If all food ingredients came fully to use, the world would have to produce only half of what it’s producing now. Can you imagine that about a half of all food gets thrown away?

Well, that might not come as a surprise to anyone living in the UAE. I mean, Friday brunches? Us faint hearted can’t even take the thought of all that gorgeous leftover food going to bin.

The saddest part is that food waste not only means bins filled to the top, but also the waste of land, water and energy resources used in the production, processing and distribution of that food.

Luckily, there’s a lot we all can do.

Hello Chef box subscribers definitely are on the right track already. Food waste gets reduced automatically when there’s no need for going to the supermarket that often. You get less tempted to buy something unrealistic that you don’t end up using. Shopping less is shopping smart!

When cooking from the box, there’s no over-serving of ingredients. Everything is proportioned. There’s no over-serving of food, either. You cook what you eat. That said, our servings definitely are generous! They actually are designed so that the leftovers can easily be packed into next day’s lunch box(es). A feature that many of our Family box clients highly appreciate!

Storing ingredients and foods in the right places also reduces waste. When you receive your box, it’s wise to open those small individual boxes and at least take a quick look if some things should be separated into cupboard, vegetable drawer, or freezer. For example, if you know there will be one evening during the week when you’re not going to be able to cook, freeze one of the proteins. One weekend meal sorted!

Even with all the precautions some ingredients and foods do end up in the bin. Keep track of what you usually throw away. Is it tainted vegetables and fruits? Leftover cooked pasta, rice, meat or fish? In that case, check out our next blog post about transforming waste into taste.
