Ingredient of the month: Pomegranate

By Jan 18, 2021 Recipes

Welcome to our new ingredient series! Each month, we will spotlight one ingredient – it could be seasonal, new to the menu or just something we think you would love to learn more about. We’ll talk about where the ingredient comes from, and how you can best utilise it using Hello Chef recipes. Sound good so far? Great! Let’s check out the first ingredient…

Pomegranate

Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, pomegranates are a great health-boosting addition to any diet. Though its exterior consists of a thick, inedible skin, once opened, pomegranates contain hundreds of tiny, juicy seeds – perfect for adding to salads or enjoying solo as a mid-morning snack.

We’re a big fan of pomegranates here at Hello Chef. We include whole pomegranates in our recipe boxes, sourced from India and courtesy of our local supplier, Barakat. If you’ve been a customer for a while, you’ll know that we often add tips to our recipe cards to guide you through the process of deseeding a pomegranate, but in case you’ve forgotten – click here

Here are some of our favourite pomegranate recipes for you to try…

Lamb Meatballs with Fattoush

Those of you residing in the region will know that fattoush is a Lebanese salad comprising lettuce, tomatoes, sumac, fried pittas, cucumbers and… you guessed it – pomegranate seeds! Not only is it great as a standalone dish, but we particularly enjoy it as a side dish to this Middle Eastern take on meatballs.

Jewelled Bulgur Salad with Roast Root Veg and Tahini Dressing

Another Middle Eastern dish for you to try! This delicious veggie salad uses bulgar – which is made from the cracked parboiled groats of durum wheat. We think it tastes just like healthy pasta!

Crispy Chicken and Hummus Fatteh with Pomegranate Molasses

There’s no whole pomegranate to deseed in this recipe; instead, we use molasses, which is essentially sweetened pomegranate juice that’s been formed into a glaze (and is delicious on salads!)

Herby Tahini and Pomegranate Salmon with Glazed Carrots

This calorie-smart salmon dish pairs the nutty, sesame flavour of the tahini with sweet pomegranate seeds and glazed carrots. It’s a real hit with customers everytime it appears on our menu, so be sure to try this one for yourself!
